Rush at Lehigh College

Ok, here is how the rush process goes on my campus. I will explain it by how it does happen and by how the University expects it to happen.

Rush does not officially begin until the first week in October. As far as the University is concerned, there is to be no contact between freshman men and fraternity brothers. Parties are not included in this no contact rule, but basically there is to be no outing of all freshmen with brothers. During the first week of rush, there is a big meeting. All of the houses set up a table in the student center, and prospective rushees go sign up to rush at a house. There is a master rush list, but signing a house's specfifc list gets you a better chance at being called up later. After this initial meeting there are four nights of open houses. The first night is for off-campus houses, and the other three nights are for sections of the frat house area. When you visit a house during open house, you get a tour of the house, see the stuff that the brothers think is important for a rush to see. After the open houses, open rush begins.

Open rush is a crazy time. A lot of the houses have rush up to dinner at the house, they go out bowling, ice skating, to see movies, or just to hang out up at the house. It is a great way to get to know all of the guys at the house, and it certainly lets you explore your options. I know that I would not have been able to pick from 28 houses just by the judgements of a week. The six weeks that we get are more than enough time to make an impression on at least one house. Also, it gives those who decide to join the game late plenty of time to catch up. One of my friends just got interested in teh rush process, and he is now about as far along as I am. The one thing that bothers me about the length of this rush process is the length of it. I am not getting sick of it, but it seems to be dragging on. I just wish that bid-day was here already so I would know what was going on. The one thing that does bother me is that I have to wait until second semester to find out about pre-bids, and I have to wait until the end of january to find out about bids. I am thankful however, becuase some of the stories I have heard about one week rush are horrible.
