"Where the Ships Die"

Summary

This is another well written book by Dietz. The story starts with two interstellar industrialists, who own the exact co-ordinates to one of the few wormholes that have both ends in known space. These wormholes make shipping much easier and cheaper. Since only their company can use it they have a massive advantage over their competitors.

As the story opens they are murdered. Leaveing their sheltered son orphaned in a prep school half a galaxy away. The son is soon kicked out for missing his tuition payments. He soon ends up as a prisoner in a work camp that cuts up olds ships for scrap. Somehow he must escape and find where his parents kept the co-ordinates for the wormhole and restore his family fortune.

Review

This is another great story from Dietz. Though not his best, it is still definitly worth reading. One of Dietz's strength is his willingness to utilize many theory's of space travel. In some books their arm sub-space drives, while in others like this one Wormholes are utilized. Most authors I've read pick one future and stick to it. His flexible writing style is, in my opinion, one of his best qualities as a writer. In short, it's a good book, but read "Legion of the Damned" and "Bodyguard" first.
