MiB don't wear the black suit/black tie ensemble that made them so menacing in the 20th century. Many outsiders claim otherwise (see RiB, below), but outsiders never know the real truth, do they? MiB have their choice of any clothing they desire, so long as they maintain a black (or any shade thereof) color scheme.
The Shades
They look like totally normal sunglasses (which, even after 150 years, have not gone out of style). But they are so much more:
DR: 30 PD: 6 HP: 100
~Thermograph/Infrared Imaging
~24x Telescopic/Microscopic Enhancement
~Alien Identification Protocol (any being sighted by
the MiB is identified through HUD)
~Human Identification Protocol
HUD displays the following information
about any human focused on by the user:
-Name, Birthdate,
occupation, marital/legal status, tax/criminal/school records
~Rangefinder
~1000 GB storage; maps, files, photos, etc. (can all
be accessed by user's touch)
~Direct link to Bug (see below), allowing transfer of
any information in storage to be transferred
to any other MiB
Using the Shades is simple. The user must actively
think of the ability of the glasses they wish to activate, and then touch
the glasses frame. The necessity of touch prevents random background
thoughts from altering the functioning of the Shades.
The Vest
Nearly invisible to the naked eye, the Reflex Vest is worn under the MiB's clothing.
~Works exactly like the Reflex armor in Ultra Tech
~Protects front and back of torso
The Wristwatch
Worn at all times by all MiB, the Wristwatch is a very useful tool.
~Working Timepiece with automatic realignment to any Local
time (through analysis of shadow length
and magnetic fields compared to on-file planet
catalogs)
~Compass
~Video Disk Player: allows the MiB to insert and play
any video disk of the correct manufacture
(nearly every disk produced by the Galactic mass-market).
Optional display modes include a
holoprojection and simply allowing the 2D image
to be played on the watchface itself. Audio is
supplied by a direct link to the Bug
~S.C.R.U.B. Electromagnetic Neurological Operations Deceivertron:
the MiB places his hand on the
victim's shoulder (or closest corresponding appendage)
and the Wristwatch's computer automatically
aligns its electric discharge to the precise voltage
and amperage necessary to knock the victim
unconscious, while simultaneously altering the
brain's neurochemical messengers, causing said
victim to forget the MiB completely and to assume
that it had been knocked unconscious by a natural
phenomenon. Common lingo used within a group
of MiB to indicate the possible necessity of causing
a victim to forget an encounter is: "Let's introduce
him to Uncle Enod."
The Bug
If you have read Fahrenheit 451, or have seen True Lies, then you know what this is. It's a nearly undetectable communications device worn in the ear at all times. To use it, one must touch the Bug itself (while it is in the ear) and speak the name of the MiB one wishes to reach. The link will be maintained as long as the MiB keeps his finger on the Bug, or instructs it to vox mode.
~Unlimited range
~non-traceable/non-tappable/non-interruptable
RiBs are used as decoys in the Great Scheme. This is the usual structure, but different jobs sometimes require different forms; in these cases, new models of RiB can and will be manufactured.
They are 6' with pale skin and red lips. They are randomly programmed with strange accents, odd behavioral twitches and mannerisms, very exotic-looking equipment (which is almost always useless) or any combination of these. They are not combative, and will always attempt escape in the event of a mishap. They have a very strong survival instinct, but will destroy themselves if there are no other options (i.e. imminent capture, discovery, etc.). This "self-destruct" is simply the liquefaction of the metallic/plastic/polymer innards through the use of strategically-placed acid pouches that are pumped through the "veins" of the RiB, thus causing total system disintegration.
They have garnered a reputation among MiB as doting and stupid, though this is most likely the result of the very literal response that RiBs have to MiB orders. RiBs are hard-programmed to immediately follow any orders given to them by MiB, no matter how ridiculous or menial. Many of the less scrupulous MiB have used this to their advantage, as Duke and Cable did in the apprehension of Robert Smith.
