Letter to the editor

L.A. Church of Christ

In response to the Commentary "From hick town to bigtown" by Tina Marie Holewinski, which appeared in the University Times on November 20.

Los Angeles Church of Christ member Tina said, "I met so many interesting people out here and I discovered a great church-the L.A. Church of Christ in Pasadena." Tina stated that she is from Wisconsin and has been in Los Angeles for two months.

From the beginning there has been controversy about whether or not the The Los Angeles Church of Christ (LACC) is a cult. The Los Angeles Church of Christ is part of the International Churches of Christ.

My experience with the Los Angeles Church of Christ began here at Cal State L.A. in 1990. Members of the Los Angeles Church of Christ began harassing me after my letter to the editor was printed in the U.T. about my experience with the Los Angeles Church of Christ.

I filed a complaint with the Center for Student Life and the University Police. The harassment continued until the University Police spoke to one of the LACC members. I'm aware of CSLA students who have said that they, too, were harassed by the Los Angeles Church of Christ.

With the help of my friends we formed a chapter of Cult Awareness RESources, CARES. CARES provides information to the campus community about cult activity, including information about International Churches of Christ.

I currently direct CARES which is located at www.CultsOnCampus.com on the Internet. Over the years CSLA students, people across the country and now from different parts of the world have expressed their thanks to CARES for the information that it has provided.

The Los Angeles Church of Christ has shown its thankfulness by destroying hundreds and hundreds of flyers posted by CARES.

The Center for Student Life office and the University Council of Campus Ministries office are distributing a brochure that is called Responding to High-Pressure Groups at CSULA, which will help everyone make an informed choice about any group that he or she joins.
