The Dark Phoenix has a multitude of advantages over the Clans as well as the Inner Sphere. Among these is the fact that the Dark Phoenix is not afraid to use new technology to their advantage, no matter where it came from. They make use of Clan technology as well as the new Inner Sphere advances that the Clans have not thought of yet, and the result of this open-mindedness is the acquisition of every advantageous advance, not just Clan advances or Inner Sphere advances.

The Dark Phoenix does not hesitate to use Triple-Strength Myomer, hatchets, swords, or the C4 system, which is basically an improved copy of the Draconis Combine C3 system. Dark Phoenix engineers basically use anything they see that they can use to their advantage, a philosophy that has long helped them in all their military endeavors.

The C4 System

The C4 is one of the Dark Phoenix's best advantages over the Clans and the Inner Sphere. Based on the Draconis Combine's C3, it can coordinate up to five slave units and weighs only four tons, taking up two critical spaces. The slave units are also advanced, taking no critical space and only weighing a ton (this ton should be added on when figuring in the weight of the cockpit)

The C4 allows a Mech or vehicle to fire at a target as if it were firing from the range of the closest Mech in its network with line-of-sight. A Mech or vehicle's weapons cannot exceed its maximum range, but a well-placed GuardMate can reduce a weapon's long range to short range. The C4 is also immune to the effects of the Guardian ECM and Watchdog system, although the Angel ECM still is capable of jamming the network system.

The C4 command computer is capable of controlling five other units, so a company commander can extend the network by adding another C4 to slave the command computers of other Guards. This convention allows up to six Guards (or 36 Mechs) all to be part of the same network and has done wonders for the Dark Phoenix in countless battles.

Only the Dark Phoenix and the Clan Wolfwere are known to be equipped with the C4 system. Due to its immense tactical advantage, the Dark Phoenix is extremely reluctant to share its secrets with its allies, and all attempts to date by the Inner Sphere and the Clans to steal this technology have failed, according to Dark Phoenix reports.

Inferno Mines

Among the many surprises the Dark Phoenix uses which the Clans deem dishonorable is the Inferno mine. Dark Phoenix engineers took standard SRM-2 Inferno missiles and redesigned them to be remotely triggered or be weight-sensitive, and the results were fantastic. At the proximity that Inferno mines are released, the fluid covers more area of the Mech and causes more heat to build up for a longer period of time.

Inferno mines must be designated as either remote-detonated or pressure-sensitive when they are laid down. Remote-detonated mines can be used at any time by the controlling player but they can only be used once during the game. Pressure-sensitive mines are set to explode when a certain weight is placed upon them. Pressure sensitive mines can be set off three times during a game.

When a Mech is hit by an Inferno mine, its internal heat raises by ten points immediately. For the next ten turns, the Mech is on fire, adding a -2 modifier to any attacks made using infrared sensors. Multiple Inferno mines do not raise the Mech's heat any more, but they do add to the duration of the burning. Unarmored infantry and vehicles victimized by Inferno mines are destroyed immediately.

Increased Armor Protection

According to standard BattleTech rules, a Mech may only be allocated twice the armor points on a location as exist on that Mech's internal structure for that location. For example, a Mech with ten internal structure points in its arms may only allocate twenty points of armor to that location. When dealing with torso locations, the total armor value allowed is supposed to be split between the front and rear.

Dark Phoenix engineers have discovered a highly effective but costly way to provide the front of a torso location with exactly double the armor value as its respective internal structure location, and at most 40% that value on the rear armor. This manner of manufacturing armor is so costly, however, that only the Dark Phoenix's Ninja Mech designs have been outfitted with this kind of armor protection.
