The Southern Brass Classic is a DCI-sanctioned drum & bugle corps competition.
The SBC debuted in August of 1995, and has seen both its ups and downs since then.
The inaugural 1995 SBC was a huge success. Featured corps included Bluecoats, Glassmen, Spirit of Atlanta, Southwind, and the Cavaliers, who would go on to win DCI's coveted World Championship
the next week.
Last August, the Epsilon Nu chapter of Phi Mu Alpha teamed up
with the Jacksonville State University Marching Southerners and
Spirit of Atlanta drum & bugle corps to present the 1997
Drums Across America, a DCI Focus show, in Jacksonville, Alabama
. The show was held on Saturday, August 9, 1997, at 7:00 p.m., in JSU's
Paul Snow Stadium.
The show was an incredible success. Although rain soaked the state of Alabama for most of the day on Saturday, by the time Southwind took the field to open the contest, the clouds had given way to clear skies, to the delight of the more than 9,000 fans in attendance.
The Madison Scouts, who astounded the crowd with a virtuoso standstill performance at the rain-soaked 1996 show, proved that they are even more exciting when they actually get to march, winning this year's show easily with a 91.9, a full 1.2 points higher than the second place Phantom Regiment.
Plans are now being made for the 1998 Drums Across America. Details will be posted here as soon as they are available. Keep checking back!
