More students of color earn their bachelor’s degrees from City University of New York than any other institution in the country, according to a report conducted by the magazine, Black Issues in Higher Education..
City College ranked first in the
“Top 100” poll. Baruch ranked third, York College took eighth place, Lehman
College 13th, Brooklyn College 19th and John Jay College of Criminal Justice
ranked 22nd. Hunter College ranked 17th overall, and 45th out of
fifty colleges in conferring the most bachelor degrees to Latinos. Baruch
College placed 28th and Queens 50th out of fifty in granting baccalaureates
to Asian-Americans.
Borough of Manhattan Community College
ranked first in the number of associate degrees awarded to African-Americans
and second in the number of associate degrees given to minorities in general,
while New York Technical College and John Jay ranked first and second respectfully
among four-year colleges in awarding associate degrees to minorities.
The rankings are based on national
surveys taken by the U.S. Department of Education data from 1994 to 1996.
According to ex-CUNY Chancellor W. Ann Reynolds, “This success is the result
of the University’s emphasis in recent years on greater academic preparation,
intensive remediation at the pre-freshman level, and student retention.”
