Born To Die

It's natural for mothers to rejoice all the while
They are expecting their first precious child
They dream of the day he will finally be here
The gift from God whom they love so dear
But what would it be like to know from the start
That he would one day be torn from your heart
And while you're rejoicing, be wondering why
It had to be your son who was born to die.

So long he'd been promised, you'd waited in hope
Bound in such trouble you barely could cope
Clinging to prophecies of a King of Kings
A Savior of nations, a fulfiller of dreams
Born to a virgin, it could even be you
To discover he's your child, a dream come true
But still you are crying and wondering why
If he's the Messiah, why does he have to die?

You watched him grow up to be strong and great
And for thirty-three years you dreaded his fate
You heard of his teaching and miracles with joy
But to you, he would always be your little boy
The one that you'd comforted, nurtured and loved
The firstborn son that was sent from above
And with every miracle asking Adonai
This man is your son, could he really just die?

Then the fateful day that you knew from the start
Had come, and it nearly tore you apart
The news that they'd gathered and took him away
To be slaughtered, a sin offering for those gone astray
This man, who abhorred all violence and strife
To be laughed at and spit on while they took his life
And you who gave birth to him, wondering why
Your child, for these people, would willingly die

You were there when they hung him to see him through
Wishing there was something more you could do
Maybe he'll come down off of the cross
But you knew if he did so, the world would be lost
So he died, and they placed him dead in your arms
This man who had never done anyone harm
And though it was selfish, you just had to cry
And God cried with you, for the Savior had died

Mary, don't cry, for the deed has been done
To raise him the hardest battle you'd ever won
To look seeing only his death, and not see
The cross as Heaven's ultimate victory
To love him so dearly knowing all the while
One day you would have to give up your child
The freedom of man he was destined to buy
With the greatest of sacrifices, sent here to die.

Now go before us and prepare the way
For your darling child has been risen today
And because of his sacrifice we can all see
The things of the spirit, our souls set free
To be one with the Father, as we once were
This is the heritage he has conferred
Upon us, all brothers and sisters in Christ
Because you were willing to bear him to die.
