Cooking Tips for Students (and others)
Various information that may or may not be helpful
So, you're a student, you've gone off meal-plan, you need to eat, what do you do?
First stop: Buy your pots and pans!
A trip to the shopping mall to buy your kitchen supplies is necessary before you cook. Here are some suggestions, as to what to buy:
- Pots and Pan
- 2 pots (you could get by with one, but two will make life much easier>
- a frying pan
- top for at least one of your pots
- baking pan-a deeper pan is more versatile than a baking sheet (not that you can't have both)
- Cutlery, etc.
- a sharp knife-buy a good one, your fingers are worth the extra money, and it will save the extra effort. My first knife wasn't good, and I ended up buying a new one.
- silverware-knife, fork, spoon
- wooden spoon to cook with
- plastic spatula-you can get away with just using the spatula
- measuring spoons-you'll only need these if you bake a lot
- chopping board-wood, plastic, etc.
- Optional:
- tupperware-how else are you going to store your leftovers?
- mixing bowl-do you plan on making cookies?
- collander-you could also use the knife-against-side-of-pot method
- steamer-this is an easy and convenient way of cooking vegetables
- measuring cup
Next: The supermarket!
You have the utensils, now it is off to the supermarket. What should you buy? This is hard to answer, it depends on what you plan to eat. TV dinners? Pasta? Healthy food? Planning what you will eat for the first few weeks and making a list based on that is helpful and will prevent you from buying food you don't need. But here are some suggestions:
- milk
- eggs
- oil-both vegetable and olive-buy the extra virgin, its not worth it otherwise
- flour
- pasta
- salt and sugar
- butter/margarine
- rice
- onions
- garlic
- vegetables-ie. carrots, spinach, broccoli, zuchinni etc.
- fruit-ie. apples, bananas, oranges
- meat-ie. beef, chicken, pork
- bread-great for sandwiches
- cereal-or whatever else you eat for breakfast
- crackers-anything to snack on
- spices-this depends on your use-buy as you need, but to start off with: oregano, marjoram, rosemary, cinammon, thyme, basil (it is worth buying a plant if you use a lot of this-it looks nice too)
This is just an idea. As you become more experienced, you'll realise what you need. How much should you buy? Well, how much do you eat? For instance, if you eat a banana every day and shop once a week, buy seven bananas. Running out of food or buying too much food is initially a problem. Well, that's all for now.
