HOOPS

This past Winter Quarter the Fiji basketball team made its finest showing in house history. The Fiji ballers finished in 2nd place to a strong Zeta Beta Tau squad in the fraternity division of intramural basketball. Strong play on the boards by Jason Taylor, Dave Fults and Fiji friend Dave Brockmeyer, set up the fast break offense which posted scores averaging in the 40s. Three point lines were added to the Event Center this year which added a new dimension to the game. Fults made good use of the new lines to lead the team in scoring. Taylor's intimidating shot blocking plus Brian Marshall's open court ball handling and defense stifled opposing teams and kept the momentum in Fiji favor. Dan Gould gave his finest contribution against Sigma Alpha Epsilon by holding their leading scorer to only three baskets for the game. Rookie sensation John Lofthus rounded out the team as a great role-playing and rebounding sixth man.

This years team looks to be just as good. Led by junior John Lofthus and senior Rich Whang, a terrific rebounder and defensive presence, Fiji expects to get back to the championship game. Also playing a large role will be sophomores Archie Kordestani and Steve Gelfond. Gelfond is expected to distribute the ball as the point guard while Kordestani will provide scoring for the team.

VOLLEYBALL

Three Fiji volleyball teams were entered in the first annual Phi-Ball Tourney this past spring and each of the teams competed strongly. The tournament, hosted by Alpha Phi Sorority, was held at Greek Park on April 12th. The number one Fiji team finished second overall to Sigma Chi in a thrilling championship game. The final match went the full three games ending in a 8-11, 11-5, 9-11 loss. The team included Dave Fults, Steve Hibbard, Chris Wehman, Jason Taylor, and sub for injured Taylor, Brad Webre. Hibbard set throughout the rotation while Fults and Wehman paced the attack. Webre contributed to the team with key blocking. The second and third teams did not finish quite as well but thoroughly enjoyed themselves, in good Fiji fashion and full of libations. The second team included: John Lofthus, John Elliott, Robinson Hughes, and Russ Webb while the final team had Ben Henry, Travis Keys, Garrett Richardson, and Jeff Cooper.

This years team will feature Lofthus, Elliott, Hughes, and newcomer sophomore Jason Black. Lofthus will provide some key blocking while Black will pace the attack with his kills. All four are scheduled to play intramural volleyball Fall Quarter in attempt to gel for the Phi-Ball tournament in the spring of 1998.
