Gamma Chi held its 6th annual Islander on May 9th, 1997 and it was a huge success. Past Islanders have included such acts as 311, Eek-a-Mouse, and Sublime, making Islander Santa Barbara's most anticipated concert each year. 311 and Sublime have both enjoyed success on a national level since playing at the house. Sublime recently won an award at the 1997 MTV Music Awards. With such huge acts in the past, Islander Chairs Tom Williams and Alex Willingham had a tough act to follow. Now only did they live up to the expectations, but they exceeded them. With a lineup the boasted Goldfinger, Buck O'Nine, and Santa Barbara's own Henchmyn, the 1997 Islander captivated the crowd.
The first band on stage was the Henchmyn, a local ska band that recently released their first compact disc. They were followed by another ska band, Buck O'Nine, which rallied the crowd with their jazzy horn section. Buck O'Nine has recently won acclaim for their last album, Twenty-Eight Teeth, which includes the hit, My Town. Finally, Goldfinger came on and played many of their popular songs from their previously released album and selected songs from their new album,Hang Ups. Goldfinger originally hit the big time with their hit Here In The Bedroom that played for some time on MTV. The concert raised money for the Surfrider foundation, a charity founded for preserving coastal regions. With such acts as Blink-182, Buck O'Nine, Goldfinger, and Unwritten Law playing at the chapter house in the past six months, Gamma Chi has distinguished itself as the top concert venue in the Santa Barbara area.
