PLUS Application FAQ

Contained here are one of our most frequently asked questions regarding the PLUS application. Of course we always welcome additional questions or comments.

Q: I only qualify for one of the three criteria. Should I still apply?
A: PLUS accepts 200 qualified applicants each year. A small percentage of these participants meet only one of the criteria. We recommend that you apply.

Q: What does the application review committee look for in an essay?
A: Each essay answer should be no longer than one page. The committee is most interested in what circumstances have most influenced your family life and your educational attainment. We want to get an idea of what you are like as a person. Grammar and punctuation is less important than content.

Q: What if the Federal tax forms do not accurately reflect my family's income?
A: Federal guidelines mandate that PLUS look at parental tax forms to determine your eligibility for the program. If other circumstances influence your family's income, be sure to mention this in the answer to Essay Question #3.

Q: If I worked last year, do I need to submit my tax forms also?
A: Typically, a student's overall income is not large enough to make a difference in eligibility for PLUS. If you had circumstances that lead to you being an independent student, please turn in your Federal income tax forms and mention this in your answer to Essay Question #3.
