ΚΚ She was born November 6, 1919 to William and Maria Pope Southam in Vernal, Utah. Married Wayne J. Cloward of Monroe, Utah, April 4, 1940.
The Clowards lived in many states during Waynes career with the U.S. Forest Service. She was active donating her time to civic and religious organizations, the Red Cross, PTA, Eastern Star. She owned and operated Cloward Realty in Atlanta, and had been a correspondent and editor for local news agencies in many of the areas they lived. After retirement they traveled extensively in Mexico, Central America, the Far East, Europe and the British Isles. They lived in Spain from 1977 to 1988 before returning to Utah, Texas and then Georgia.
In Spain, she was president of the Malaga Chapter of the International American Club and served as editor of their newspaper. As the result of a serious illness and the inability to communicate her complicated medical history to the Spanish doctors and nurses, Arva established a Foundation for nursing studies, making scholarships available for Spanish medical personnel to attend English instruction classes. The foundation also developed a "medical menue'" which matched more than 100 Spanish medical terms with their English equivalent for use by patient and caregiver alike. The foundation was approved by the Spanish government in 1984. Her last gift to medicine was that of her body for scientific study.
She is survived by her husband; three sons, and one daughter, Cameron Cloward, Kip and Elaine Cloward, Atlanta, Georgia; Jeff and Joyce Cloward, Sugarland, Texas; and Kathy and Urs Oesch, Vilters, Switzerland. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a sister, Theresa Bird, Ogden, Utah.
Memorial services were held in Georgia, Tuesday, March 23, 1993.
