Bacteria

Picture of Blue- Green Algae a type of bacteria.

Picture of spirochettes.

Characteristics-
-unicellular
-prokaryotic- cells in which genetic materials are not contained in a nuclear     membrane
-classifed in Monera Kingdom
- 3 different shapes
   *coccus- spherical
   *bacillus- rodlike
   *vibrio, sprillum, or sprochette- curved

-2 types eubacteria and archaebacteria
*eubacteria- Many are disease-causing, but most are harmless and even beneficial,
*archaebacteria- Live in extreme conditions that were thought to be inhospitable to life and even common places such as compost piles. Archaebacteria derive energy from chemical reactions.

Reproduction-
*binary fission* - Most bacteria reproduce by the process of binary fission, in whcih the cell growns in volume until it divides in half to yield two identical daughter cells. Both of these daughter cells continue growing the same rate as the parent.

*budding*- One group reproduces with budding. In this a small bud forms at one end of the mother cells or on filaments called prosthetecae. When bud becomes about the same size as the mother it seperates.

Examples of Bacteria-
*archaebacteria
*eubacteria
*spirochettes

Guess what type of bacteria is on the the side.

Both pictures of the bacteria's structure.
