| While Abbotsford has a rockhound's club, Chilliwack does not. If you would like to start such a club, please join a discussion at: [email protected] Moderator: Dr. Eliot Esti I recently came to Chilliwack to "retire" and I would like to rekindle a long-standing interest in rockhounding. My doctorate is in phil-psych, not geology but I studied geology at Carleton University in the 60's and I worked for two years at Giant Mine and Discovery Mine in NWT. I joined the Chilliwack Museum and Historical Society partly because I have an interest in the prospecting and mining history of the Chilliwack region. I researched reports to the BC mining minister in the late 1800's which tell us that the Slesse Trail was the main transportation and supply route to the Mount Baker mines, two of which yielded over $1,000,000 in gold. "A waggon road has just been completed, at a cost of $12,000, from Huck's ranch, Chilliwack to the Selicia creek, for a distance of nearly 9 miles in the direction of the mines. The distance from the termination of this road to the International Boundary is about 12 miles." -Annual Report of the Minister of Mines (BC), 1901, page 1121 "It is well known that gold is to be found in almost every stream in the Province." -Annual Report of the Minister of Mines (BC), 1888, page 327 True or False? True ... and that includes the Chilliwack River However, a Chilliwack Rockhounds Club can do many things from sharing knowledge on rock cutting, drilling and polishing to field trips. First we need to find out if there is enough interest from online discussion and if there is we can plan public meetings.
