Though a general purpose unit at the core, the Zaku is built on a philosophy of quality of workmanship over quantity of production. While other colonies prefer the comfort of numbers, Ark Orion's government decided it would rather have one machine that was worth its salt than ten that only look good on parade. The Zaku's superiority stems from its optional attachments, which allow it to circumvent the energy limitations of a Neutron-S generator by mounting modular components that possess their own independent power sources. This gives the suit the ability to maintain higher-than-average performance levels without overwhelming its own engine. Lifted from the Newtype Corps' Dancer prototype, this feature inspired the United Alliance to follow suit with their Fox.
Since its original deployment, the Zaku has undergone changes to these augmentation packs as Ark Orion's technology has advanced. The latest configuration sets are based heavily on equipment fielded by the Newtype Corps. The Zaku's "Archer" package, originally the code-name for a missile-based fire support system, now consists of an incredibly powerful high-energy beam cannon that rivals the main gun of several battleships. This gun not only packs a punch, but it also has a rapid recharging time thanks to its backpack generator. Likewise, the "Slasher" weapon system has been upgraded to match the new version of the pack that was introduced with the Zaku II.
New to the Zaku option set is the "Delphi" package, which has been optimized for Ark Orion's Newtype pilots. It adds a pair of hyperpulse engines which use laser-ignited propellant and plasma reactions to achieve a surprising top speed. The strenuous manoeuvring of a Zaku with these engines in play can only be handled safely by augmented humans or Newtypes. In addition, inside each of the pack's two thruster pods are a trio of "Wasp" bits; small, agile remote weapons that respond to a Newtype's mental Resonance impulses. Each of these mounts a high-impact beam cannon.
