Story:
By the Third Space War, mobile suit development and production had gone from a clandestine government enterprise to a full-blown industry. Several private companies had, for almost a decade, taken advantage of the turbulent period between the second and third wars by creating and marketing their own mobile weapons to public
organizations. Independent nations on Earth, space colonies, mercenaries, and even a number of corporations and security firms had access to these weapons, which were often as powerful as mainstream military models. The Ignus
was just such a machine, designed by the freelance engineers known as the
"Sinister 8." It was so impressive that it was not only picked up by the United
Alliance but also subcontracted to the infamous Armatech Syndicate, who supplied these units to the UA's
armed forces for two years prior to the Third Space War.
The Ignus was created by Sinister 8 Productions in their bid for a lucrative UA arms contract to build a new escort unit for both terrestrial and space battleships. While many companies, both established and emerging, opted for various mobile suit designs, this more eccentric team took a page from the Grand Cross' attempt to revamp mobile armor engineering. Their Ignus, mounting powerful recoilless cannons, thermal claws, and a host of smaller vulcans and beam guns, seemed perfectly suited
for engaging in a variety of combat styles at different ranges. It was also quite a fast unit, moreso than some mobile suits, with vernier engines that allowed it to hover over any terrain, and even operate well enough in space. Though, while the Ignus had speed, its girth often made tight maneuvers extremely difficult.
Following the Third Space War, most Ignus units fell into the hands of the New Alliance, who had possession of an Armatech factory complex that was underneath their secret base of operations. For several years, these mobile armors served both as escorts and as armed scouts, their heavy armor and arsenals enabling them to survive easily in most hostile zones. More recently, however, the Alliance's machines have also become testbeds for its new beam shield technology. Three heavy emitters were mounted on many Ignus,' allowing them to create a highly defensive circular barrier along the dorsal section of
their hulls. This added feature not only increases the survivability of the machines, but also augments
their original purpose, allowing them to become mobile shields for the
battleships in their care.
