    Story:

By the Third Space War, mobile suit development and production had gone from a clandestine government enterprise to a full-blown industry. Several private companies had, for almost a decade, taken advantage of the turbulent period between the second and third wars by creating and marketing their own mobile weapons to public organizations. Independent nations on Earth, space colonies, mercenaries, and even a number of corporations and security firms had access to these weapons, which were often as powerful as mainstream military models. Though it was just one of over a dozen prominent mobile suit manufacturers, Anderson-Jones Technologies was among the most surprising success stories of its time, first with its popular Dreng infantry unit, and later with the Gyan aerial combat specialist.

The Gyan was designed to be rugged, armored combatant that could mount a crippling airborne assault with one volley of fire. To this end, it goes as far as to sacrifice aerodynamic design elements to incorporate as many weapons as it possibly can without severely hampering its ability to sustain flight. Though its legs and body mount heavy turbine engines that give the suit a great deal of maneuvering ability, its shear speed is lower than most conventional fighter jets. At best, its aerial attack configuration can be designated a fighter/bomber that excels in air-to-ground and air-to-air combat. In addition, the suit's designers, whether by fluke or by intention, did not equip the Gyan with any anti-mobile suit melee weaponry. It is assumed that Anderson-Jones' team meant for their design to serve a more specific and decisive military role than most mobile suits are known for.

Market distribution of the Gyan commenced a few years before the Third Space War, giving it plenty of time to spread itself over the Earth. Though, with some modifications, the machine is capable of operating in space, its design specs are clearly geared toward atmospheric combat. A number of these machines were purchased by smaller nations, primarily fledgling members of the United Alliance who were denied the full protection of its armed forces. When the Newtype Corps spread its rebellion over the planet, a number of these countries resisted, and the Gyan became a noteworthy means of fighting back. Unfortunately, in the post-war world, this machine is less of a common sight, though several are used by agents of the Church of Man. The religious organization came across the bulk of their units when it uncovered the remains of an Anderson-Jones aerodrome. One of their units, however, found its way into the hands of Vacillia's defenders following a foiled raid orchestrated by the Church.

At least one post-war variation of the standard Gyan has cropped up. Used by the Church in an attack on the New Alliance's expeditionary fleet to Vacillia, this machine replaced the suit's forearms and hands with a pair of large, wing-shaped shields that had been treated with an anti-beam coating. In addition, its missile pods were removed and the power of its chest beam cannon was reduced by 60%, severely limiting its offensive capabilities. These alterations were made to discourage the unit from engaging in direct combat, and to account for the energy drain of its radically improved verniers and onboard Field Extender. The latter is a compact device that allows a single Coordinator to broaden his/her influence over longer ranges, freeing the inference restrictions on an entire squadron of mecha at once. However, the extender's reach still has a limited range, and suit's that travel outside it's anti-Resonance/Dissonance "bubble" are left with the usual 54 seconds of operation time before shutdown. This makes it tricky to employ the device on mobile suits.
