Designed by Vulcan Industrial, which remains a powerful influence among the colonies, the Gouf II is both a field commander's unit and a deadly close-range brawler. Like its predecessor, its basic frame and musculature are very strong and durable, optimizing its ability to perform physical attacks at close range. Its choice of weapons follows through on its attributes, with a heavy beam sword emitter and chain length built into either arm. The former produces a wide, torching energy blade that is much more powerful than typical beam sabres. The latter replaces the original Gouf's conductive whip with a longer wire that ends in a multi-beam emitter that creates a spinning arrangement of smaller blades.
Unlike the original Gouf, the Gouf II does not have the option of carrying a rifle or heavy weapon. Instead, its hands have been designed with beam cannon ports at the tip of each finger. These mini "hand" guns have the range of a typical beam rifle, but offer much more destructive potential as well as a psychological fear-factor. Though they make the Gouf II innovative, however, the loss of optional hand weapons, as well as the placement of most of its weapons within its arms, give the machine a potentially glaring weakness. Its vulnerability is offset, though, by the presence of two beam shield emitters which, together, create a diamond-shaped barrier that protects the mobile suit's entire upper body from forward attacks.
Among the colonies, the Gouf II is a relatively new design that has started to find its way into the ranks of several growing mobile suit units. Overall, it is a very effective machine, though some pilots handle its features better than others. Unfortunately, its high manufacturing costs keep it from seeing wide scale production, since the colonies, no matter their affiliation, make a strong effort to conserve their resources whenever possible.
