    Story:

Ten years ago Michael Holkins was a poor out of work engineer living on Ark Leo with several good ideas, but no money for groceries. The day he moved into a friend's apartment after being evicted he was given some life-changing advice: "Give people an invention that will tie their shoes and they'll scoff; give them something to kill each other with and they"ll shower you with money." That night he began drawing up the plans for his latest project, a heavy mobile suit designed for intense combat. One year later he presented the plans for his mobile suit, Dreng, to the candidate that would be able to supply the most lucrative contract, the Grand Cross Army. In response they sent back the now infamous "12-point list" that pointed out twelve major flaws in Holkins design.

Discouraged, Holkins went back to Ark Leo and applied for a janitorial position at a local High School and gave up on his career as an engineer altogether. The weeks passed and Holkins found himself battling with a particularly tough stain in the boys locket room when his roommate called the school with an urgent message. It seemed that a large commercial company, Anderson-Jones Technologies, had seen his design and wanted to buy it, in addition to hiring him as a consultant. He quit his janitorial job on the spot and immediately went to work with Anderson-Jones where he spent two years helping their teams improve and test the Dreng Heavy Infantry Mobile Suit.

In the seven years that it has been in production it has become a favorite amongst several colony militaries, many of whom have leased production from Anderson-Jones to produce their own. This and many other factors encountered over the years have resulted in some widely customized Drengs; however, most of the units have remained unchanged, a testament to its arsenal. Its primary weapon is large caliber beam rifle that is tuned to fire at a very high velocity, which is actually faster than any suit before it and many after it, that gives it good penetration, damage, and excellent range. The rifle fires either in single shot or five shot bursts and each energy-cap carries enough power for 100 shots or 20 bursts; it can also carry a grenade launcher that is slung underneath the barrel, the launcher can fire four 200mm grenades of several different types (usually High Explosive) before requiring reloading, but most pilots prefer to carry extra rifle ammunition than extra grenade packs.

One of the reasons the Grand Cross rejected the Dreng was because it lacked a support weapon, so when it was picked up by Anderson-Jones it was suggested that it be given one. The heavy machine gun is simply a larger version of the high velocity beam rifle that fires in full automatic only at 650 rounds per minute, though a skilled shooter can squeeze off 1 or 2 shot bursts, and is loaded by a 500 round energy drum. The Grav Hammer is, oddly enough, a simple looking large reinforced hammer that serves as a melee weapon, but most pilots know that it is anything but simple. Housed inside the head of the hammer is an ingeniously designed gravity generator that increases the force of the blow well beyond what it would normally be capable.

The largest advantage the Dreng has is its legendary reliability and durability, it is said that if there is a pilot in a bar telling a story about how he owed his survival to his mobile suit holding together with severe damage then he was flying a Dreng. This is mainly thanks to the liberal use of composite armor over critical areas and even most of the non-critical ones. As a consequence this has made the suit a bit slower and more sluggish than others, but any pilot that takes a beam blast in the cockpit and survives will say that they do not mind one bit.
