The Alastor was meant to challenge these beliefs. Designed as a specialized unit by the Newtype Corps, it was originally intended to usher in a whole new series of close combat-capable machines. Its entire frame has been reinforced to that effect, with particular attention placed on the durability of its limbs. As its designers intended, the Alastor can endure the physical wear and tear of punching, kicking, grappling, and similar manoeuvres with minimal damage to its armor or inner workings.
To emphasize these abilities, the suit was also given an arsenal well-suited to personal combat. Besides its anti-missile vulcan cannon, the Alastor carries a pair of high-power beam sabres that surpass the cutting power of most conventional counterparts. In addition, each of its arms contains a hidden feature. The left's is a garrotte wire, which super-heats to slice through most conventional mobile suit armors like butter. The right houses a high-powered beam cannon, with its firing port hidden between the palm connection sockets reserved for hand weapons. Though the range on both weapons is quite short, their damage capacity can be devastating.
The most significant feature of the Alastor, however, is its Alter Drive and the intricate new myomer arrangement that it supports. With its muscles already super-reinforced to provide the unit with 50% more physical strength and power than most mobile suits of equal size, the drive funnels core energy through them to increase their tension thresholds, and effectively double their normal performance levels. This burst of super-strength, however, can only last a few minutes before the excess heat begins to damage the Alastor internally.
Strangely enough, this innovative new design was ultimately turned down by the Newtype Corps, having been deemed too radical even for its unorthodox doctrines. Instead, the components for at least 30 Alastors were used to purchase the loyalty of one of the more powerful pirate groups in the L5 Frontier zone. In order to hide their dealings with the Corps, these marauders modified the Alastor's original appearence, albeit slightly, to a more common-looking facade.
