Happy Birthday, Captain Dobey

(October 2003)

I would like to thank my editor, Donna E for helping me with it as usual.

I would also like to thank my husband, Wayne, for helping me with some of the story.

"David, you are awful." Rosey Starsky laughed as she listened to her husband explain his little scheme to Ashleigh, Hutch and Rosey.

The Starskys had invited Hutch, Ashleigh and Sami over for dinner. The dishes were done and put away. Tbe adults were enjoying an after-dinner drink in the living room. A fire was roaring in the fireplace because the sun had just gone down and it was a little bit chilly outside.

The children were in the basement playing in the playroom. Jake had just gone to bed.

Captain Dobey's birthday was coming up in a few days and Starsky was telling everyone his devious plan for the day.

"Well, he has been extra grouchy the past few weeks because he is turning the Big Five-Five," Starsky tried to defend his belief.

"But, Partner, I didn't know if you should really do this," Hutch tried to talk him into changing his mind.

"Yeah, but we need a laugh around the office and it won't really hurt anyone."

*************

The day had finally arrived. Even though Rosey had tried to get Starsky to change his mind several times, Starsky was still going ahead with his plan. He wanted to make sure that Captain Dobey's day was memorable.

He rose from the breakfast table where the kids were having breakfast. Sarah was under the table hoping somebody would drop a few crumbs for her. Tara was asleep on the couch. Rosey was sitting in her chair giving Jake his cereal. "See you later, Lovely Lady. I'll call you at noon."

"Okay," she said as she gave Jake another spoonful. "Make it a good one."

Starsky picked up his lunch bag from the table and went around and kissed and hugged everyone. He looked inside the brown bag to see what was inside - tuna sandwiches, cookies, carrot sticks.

Rosey arose from the table and walked him over to the door. He kissed her and then he left to start up the Striped Tomato.

*********

Starsky and Hutch were sitting at their desks enjoying their morning cup of coffee when the Chief of Police, Scott Mayfield, entered the room.

"Good morning. Is Captain Dobey in his office?"

"Yes, sir. I think you can go right in." Starsky got up from his chair and he shook his superior's hand. He escorted him into Captain Dobey's office.

Then Starsky realized something - the surprise he was going to spring on his captain was about to happen. Too late. He could not stop this runaway train; he would have to ride it to the end of the line.

The door was shut to his office and the 2 gentlemen were having a very important meeting. They did not want to be disturbed.

Starsky started to silently pray that the present would not come. Maybe it would get caught in traffic. Maybe they would get the date wrong.

**********

An hour passed. The Chief of Police was still in Dobey's office talking.

Starsky was starting to believe that he was maybe out of the wooeds.

Then suddenly, a female uniformed officer whom Starsky had never met before entered the squad room.

Hutch arose from his seat, "Yes, can I help you?"

"I am here to see Captain Dobey." The young lady answered.

"I am sorry, but he is in a meeting right now. Can I maybe help you."

"No, I am here to see him, only. It is very important that I see him."

"Okay. Can you wait a minute while I go in and see if it is okay." Hutch went to Dobey's office and the girl followed him. He knocked on the door and put his head through the crack in the door.

Captain Dobey said, "Yes."

"Captain Dobey, I hate to disturb you, but there is a young lady here who wants to see you. She says it is urgent."

The Chief of Police looked at Dobey, "We are almost finished, anyways. She can come right in."

The young lady entered Dobey's office. She had a smile on her face. "Happy Birthday to You, Happy Birthday to You, Happy Birthday, Dear Captain Dobey, Happy Birthday to You." she sang.

Dobey looked at her, "What is this all about?"

The Chief of Police looked at Dobey, "Is this your birthday, Carl?"

"Yes, sir, it is."

Before Captain Dobey could say anything, the girl put down the sheet of paper she was holding and started to take off her clothes. Starsky, by this time, had left his desk and went into his supervisor's office because he had finally guessed this was his present.

Hutch took Starsky aside in the squad room, "Was this the mysterious present for Captain Dobey?"

Starsky gulped, "Yes."

"Starsky, I don't know what to say. Captain Dobey is either gonna chew us out or laugh."

The Chief of Police just stood there and said, "Well, happy birthday, Carl"

Captain Dobey arose from his desk. He went into the squad room after he told the young lady to stop taking off her clothes. She got dressed again and retreated.

"Starsky, Hutch, in my office." Dobey barked.

Starsky and Hutch did what they were told. not knowing what Captain Dobey would do.

When they were on the other side of the door and Captain Dobey was seated in his chair.

"Okay, whose idea was that?" The Chief of Police looked at both the detectives.

Starsky could not stand it any longer, and he came clean. "Captain Dobey, I cannot tell a lie. It was my idea. Hutch knew about it, and he tried to stop me."

"Starsky, this is a place of business."

Captain, I realize that."

"We are supposed to be pillars of the community."

"Yes, I know that."

"We are supposed to set the example."

"Captain, I realize that."

The Chief of Police was not amused.

**********

Several days later, it is noon at the corner of State and Main. The traffic had been moving smoothly through the intersection. As Starsky moved towards the person directing traffic, it was apparent that that person was Captain Dobey.

"Here is your coffee, Captain Dobey," Starsky said. "What would you like for lunch."
