PALO, LEYTE -- This is one lucky man. Lightning struck the umbrella he was holding and he survived to tell his tale.

Marlo Porle, 22, left his hometown of Siay, Zamboanga Sibugay late last month to complete unfinished academic requirements at the School of Health Sciences, University of the Philippines Manila, in Palo, Leyte, after which he would review for the nursing licensure examination in December.

But his hopes and dreams were nearly burnt, literally, last Oct. 3.

A lightning bolt struck the umbrella that Marlo was holding on the beach, and only pure luck and a quick reflex saved him from certain death by electrocution.
