The Study Trip to the Philippines with the Shitaba Seminar in 2007new!

This essay [which includes extensive insights about Biliran] deals with some problems we had learned about in more detail during our trip and tries to find an answer, based on our experiences from the trip, to the question of how development in the Philippines can be pushed forward... (From the Introduction of the essay written by Miss Maren Mordau, German-Japanese exchange student of Tokyo International University.)

The Expanding Environmental Damage on Earth and Our Role as Citizens

Nowadays, such realities as global warming and the destruction of the ozone layer are expanding and crossing borders of districts and states. Consequently, environmental problems emerge as topics of major importance and do not only concern the policies of a single nation... (From the lead paragraph of a published essay written in Japanese by Ms. Shizuka Arai and translated to English by Ms. Maren Mordau, both of Tokyo International University.)

Off and on since 1985, the webmaster has facilitated group study visits of young Japanese students, usually accompanied by a professor, in Leyte. The study areas have expanded to Samar and Biliran Islands since the late 1990s.

In this site, we present end-of-visit reports written by the Japanese student participants themselves. The English slightly edited for clarity, these reports were composed in a matter of hours, overnight at most, before the participants left Tacloban for Manila. Being such, they are largely impressionistic. But a Filipino reading them could get fresh insights about his milieu from a different perspective.

We also present papers and reports that have evolved out of the relevant field experiences, as well as provide links to web sections about the visited areas.
