Nurul Nuha: Dad's top backer

BY BRIAN MILLER Nov 6, 1998 (The New Paper, Singapore)

FOURTEEN-year-old Nurul Nuha is truly her father's strongest supporter.

On the first day of the trial, she appeared with a tag dangling from her
neck. It read: "Justice For Papa".

She then handed out white ribbons in a show of solidarity for her
beleaguered dad.

Yesterday, the girl came into the courtroom wth an additional piece
pinned on to her "baju".

It was a round badge - about 8 cm across. It had a picture of her father
in the centre, and above it the words "Saya Sokong Anwar" ("I support
Anwar").

Grinning, the bespectacled Nuha showed it off to all who wanted to see
it.

Her father appeared to be in high spirits too. He smiled and waved when
he emerged from the tunnel under the court-room to take his place in the
dock. The tunnel leads to the holding cells.

After kissing his wife and touching the head of his eldest daughter,
Izzah, he shook hands with some foreign journalists seated in the
gallery.

When someone remarked that he had lost some weight, he rubbed both sides
of his rib-cage and said: "Yah, man. Terrible, huh?"

That should be remedied when we next see him in court.

Because, just as he was about to leave the court, after hearing was
adjourned for the day, an old Malay woman pushed into his  hands a
Tupperware container filled with Malay "kuih" like Lapis and bread
pudding.

He accepted the gift with glee and tucked it into his folder.

Then, in a mocking gesture, he brought his finger to his lips as if to
say: "Shhh. Don't tell anyone I've got food stashed away."

The crowd laughed.
