Malaysia's Police Say Sexual Allegations Against Anwar `Untrue'
11/6/98 2:27

Kuala Lumpur, Nov. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Malaysia's police
concluded in an Aug. 20, 1997 report that the allegations
of sexual misconduct against the country's former finance
minister Anwar Ibrahim were ``untrue,'' the Agence France
Presse reported. The news agency quoted former police
Special Branch Director Mohamed Said Awang - who wrote the
report - as saying that ``the allegations do not have any
truth, and the sequence of events appeared to be something
deliberately created.'' Earlier, Said Awang told Anwar's
defense counsel that several government leaders, including
Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's political secretary Aziz
Shamsuddin, his confidant Daim Zainuddin, and his former deputy
Megat Junid Megat Ayub, were involved in a plot to topple Anwar
from his former government posts, AFP said.
     On Sept. 2, Mahathir - who's also Malaysia's Home
Minister, and controls the country's police - sacked Anwar
from his post as the country's finance minister, and charged
him with 10 counts of corruption and sodomy.
