In the past, groups of like-minded people were only coming together under the ACR banner during election years, this in order to campaign for and against specific candidates or pieces of legislation. In those earlier days, ACR winked in and out of existence every few years as election cycles came and went. The current (and continuously ongoing!) incarnation of Alaskans for Civil Rights formed in the aftermath of the 1998 election year's "No On 2!" campaign. Many of the people who had worked so hard on the No On 2! campaign throughout Alaska met in local groups after the election to reflect on that experience and to ask the question "What's next?" We collectively decided that it was time Alaskans had a statewide organization which remained active between elections in order to advance our cause and defend our rights from attack (also, frankly, the networking, friendships, parties and celebrations which we had enjoyed via ACR were just too fun to give them up!)

Because earlier incarnations of ACR came and went with various focuses, the accomplishments of those earlier ACR groups will be detailed in the "History of GBLTS in Alaska" section of the ACR website as we become informed of that history. (If you were part of ACR in those days and can send ACR's historian your own accounts of what was done by whom, then by all means please do!)

In this section of the ACR website may be found a partial listing of accomplishments by ACR--often in conjunction with various individuals,  local groups, and partner organizations--from the No On 2! campaign onward. Events (such as the annual Pride March), efforts (such as letter-writing evenings), and demonstrations (such as Silent Witness) advertised statewide by ACR are included here even though not all may have been directly sponsored by ACR. We are not trying to take credit for anyone else's work, but rather want to acknowledge all of the wonderful efforts around the state that ACR advocated and which ACR members were part of, whether or not ACR initiated or sponsored the event. Many ACR members are also members of PFLAG, GLSTN, a Court, or other partner groups to the benefit of us all. As the diva sings it, "We are Family!"
