Apologize for slavery? Well... it's a thought that never occured to me before. If you were to ask me if the folks in government should apologize for a over 130 year old dead practice, I'd say "why bother?" but obviously it's important to some poeple.
Seriously, I don't care whether we apologize for it or not. For all I care, we already have by eliminating human bondage in the United States, actions speaking louder than words, but some just won't feel comfortable until there's a more official-like apology. I don't care whether it goes in or not.
What is bugging me however, is all the whining from the right about this one little sentance which is nothing more than something with a nice intention. The fellow in charge of this isn't asking Newt to go on public TV and say,"I'm sorry there were slaves!", He's asking the government to add just a tiny sentance to a document.
Don't the republicans have anything better to complain about than one little freindly sentance? Picky, picky, picky! Obviously they're insecure if one good-willed sentance bothers them so! They should apologize for all those damn annoying news reports about this useless subject that they're causing to spring up! While we're at it let's have all the major networks apologize for letting it get out of hand! Will they do it? Hell no, they don't have to. But dammit, would it really hurt? Would it really make a difference to people who claim they don't care for an apology? It shouldn't make a difference to them. Yet would it at the same time satisfy the people who feel it would be nice? Sure it would.
