SOCIALISTS DOMINATE ELECTIONS

The elections of 1997 will belonged remembered as the elctions that changed the face of politics in Pacaria.
To the surprise of almost no one except the Populists, the Socialist Party (SP) won the most votes on October 23, garnering 33% of the Senatorial seats (34 seats). Coming in at a close second is the new Opposition, the centrist Populist Party (PP). As the results came in, most people thought the Populists were the winners. Each state reported their results in alphabetical order. When the PP took nearly 70% of the vote in Cortana, many PP members declared an early victory. PP leader Mark Connor (senator, Cortana) called the vote "the inevitable outcome against the destructive liberalism [of the SP]." But the SP was not down, nor out.
Every other party was struggling, except the Partyd Komonwalth (PK), for most of the night. Despite an early surge of votes, the Party of the Union (POU) ended up in fifth place, behind the SP, PP, PK, and the Liberal Party (LP). At the bottom were the Conservative Party (CP) and the National Caucus (NC). The newly-formed Pacarian Order Party (POP) could not run candidates, as it had not registered in time.
Even the SP had its doubts about winning. But when the results from Modena showed a whopping 94% of the votes, the SP headquarters erupted with cheers. The elections were theirs.
Prime Minister Christopher Curtis called the results "astounding" and "highly encouraging." PK leader Thomas Chase (former member of the SP) offered to help the new government.
Complete results will be here next week.

THE GAZAT IS BACK

The Komonwalthost Gazat has returned, after being absorbed by I.D.I.'s Pacarian National. I.D.I. received such a backlash from Gazat readers that they decided to publish it separately. Ken Moran has stayed with the Gazat as editor.
This is the first issue of the Gazat back.

ESTO PLANNING IS UNDERWAY

Lectoria has expressed interest in it, PM Jennifer Brubaker stepped down because of it, and President Iansen is flip-flopping on it. The Ephemeral State Treaty Organization, which has been waiting in the wings since the beginning of summer, is about to take its first step into reality. The efforts of both Foreign Affairs Minister Akanda Livash (who was recently praised by the Lectorian King's Herald) and PM Christopher Curtis have moved the project along through the government. Both the Cabinet and the Assembly have given their thumbs up, including a rousing speech of support from CP leader Pedro Ramirez, who says, "[ESTO] is not about parties; it is about making a community of micronations strong." PK leader Thomas Chase echoed Ramirez's statement, citing "the strength of one nation in ESTo will ne the strength of all," and that "[Pacaria] needs to be strong enough to support the project."
An election referendum concerning ESTO was met with overwhelming support, especially in the major cities. 97% of voters voted 'yes' to the creation of ESTO. Now that's a mandate.

THE LECTORIAN PROCLAMATION

PM Christopher Curtis has spoken with his cabinet and the President about the relationship Pacaria now enjoys with Lectoria, and the result of these discussions is the 1997 Lectorian Proclamation, which will be formally ead in the assembly this Friday (14 Nov). It reads as follows:

WHEREAS we have enjoyed a strong alliance with the Kingdom of Lectoria for some time now, and
WHEREAS both nations have supported each other in official issues so far, and
WHEREAS we as a nation and government hope that this tie will neither diminish nor die, and
WHEREAS we give the greatest respect one nation can give another,
WE HEREBY proclaim two things this day:
That Lectoria is our truest, closest ally (our 'sister' micronation, if you will), and
THAT, from this point on, every November 14th (starting with this one) shall be a NATIONAL HOLIDAY in honor of the Kingdom of Lectoria, and it shall be called LECTORIA DAY, where celebrations of Lectorian culture shall be celebrated, along with the fact we are closely tied.

GIVEN THIS DAY, etc. etc.,
PRIME MINISTER C. CURTIS
PRESIDENT W. IANSEN

No word has yet been given what celebrations shall be planned.

THE WHOLE TRUTH

with Ken Moran

Soooo... Cryonica puts the squeeze on other micronations by complaining about religion, but good old Lectoria shows its founder to be a shapeshifter of sorts, and not much of a threat. Soooo... the LOSS finally gets its poopy together and redoes its charter. Soooo... Mapulto stands up to Cryonica and its intolerance (hey, I'm not a Christian, but why would a government official take a public stance either way. What a cheeto-head). And to top off all the micronational fun fun fun, a Lectorian (Them again? Wow!) investigation finds accusations of the UM being an outlet for the Universal Life Church to be unfounded.
My, aren't we busy? While Pacaria has been fooling around, trying to put together a decent organization, the rest of the world (especially Lectoria) has been working. My complaint is that Lectoria toils (internationally) while Pacaria can't get over its political schizophrenia. Are we that great? No, we're just that whiny. Lectoria has made the time to work on these issues. Pacaria turns a blind eye and freezes up Akanda Livash's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (sounds fishy to me) just as the Ministry is about to get to work, just like Lectoria. Why? I don't know.
What I can tell you is (thank god!) that Ms. Livash is a fighter, and has her PM on her side. Curtis supports her, and that's why he kept her on the Cabinet. She isn't down, and she'll come out fihgting some more. Good for her. She's one of the few govt officials who refuses to stagnate or sit still; she has a job to do and she wants to do it. If we just let her, it'll be great for all of us. --KM
