Workers' Compensation Board president stepping down

EDMONTON (CP) - The president of the Alberta Workers' Compensation Board is leaving his $350,000-a-year post.
John Cowell plans to leave the organization when his five-year term ends in December.
Cowell said it's time for a change.
"While much remains to be done at the WCB, I have accomplished the objectives set out when I joined the organization and have decided it is time for me to explore new challenges," he said in a press release Monday.
Cowell put the organization on a solid financial footing, reduced employer premiums and even paid refunds.
At the same time, he was criticized for his $350,000 yearly salary and by workers who complained they couldn't get their claims handled properly.
"Mission Scorched Earth is accomplished," Alberta New Democrat leader Pam Barrett said Monday in a press release.
"He has finished what the government wanted him to do - make WCB cheaper for business at the expense of the working people in Alberta."
The board plan to hire a new president before Cowell's term ends in December.
