SUPPORT ANTI-SCAB LEGISLATION
FOR ALBERTA WORKERS
Recent strikes in Alberta like; Fletchers, Cargill, Safeway and the Finning Strike, became more volatile, and less likely to be settled quickly, because Alberta allows companies to use scabs during a strike.
We have No Anti-Scab legislation in Alberta. This means workers face longer periods of picketing, the possibility for daily confrontations with the police, and court injunctions since the employer can use strikebreakers at will.
Alberta New Democrats introduced petitions and a private members bill to outlaw "replacement workers" used during the recent Safeway strike.
New Democrats again called for Anti-Scab Legislation, July 14, 1997.
Dr. Raj Pannu, ND MLA, warns that, with the use of scabs, Cargill could become a sequel to the recent Safeway strike.
Since then the use of scabs have further prolonged striks in Alberta. Labour Minister Must Show Leadership in Calgary Strike
Pannu Says Employer is Refusing to Bargain in Good Faith
The Alberta New Democrats today charged that the Minister of Labour appears to be washing his hands of a volatile and
explosive strike at the Dynamic Furniture plant in Calgary.
"I visited the picket line at the plant last Friday and was shocked at the potential that exists for serious violence," said Raj Pannu,
MLA for Edmonton Strathcona.
