  • Edmonton Public School Teachers Call For Strike
Over 1400 Edmonton Public School Teachers rejected their unions last offer to the School Board and vote overwhelmingly to strike. The school board negotiator takes a 'tough' stance, as they had with support staff in October 1997, angering teachers. Meanwhile the Alberta Government fails to fully fund public education while increasing funding for private schools. The NDP blames the government for the pending teachers strike. Teachers will begin a work to rule campaign April 6, upon returning to work from spring break. At the eleventh hour, the board gives in and teachers accept a contract that is virtually identical to the one they rejected in March.
