On the eve of Alberta's annual Progressive Conservative convention, Stockwell Day, the government's Treasurer, has endorsed a rank-and-file party resolution to cut the number of provincial MLAs from 83 to 60. "I am for an intelligent approach to reducing the number of MLAs. I've consistently been a proponent of reducing the size of government, and that should mean we're willing to discuss reducing the number of us," Mr. Day said yesterday. "They did it in Ontario in a significant way and the government got re-elected there." The resolution, one of dozens that the party's constituency associations have presented for party approval, will be debated this weekend in the Rocky Mountain resort town of Jasper.
A divided Red Deer city council voted Monday
to phase out day-care subsidies paid to about 150 poor families.
Day-care advocates denounced the move, saying it will increase poverty
and force families onto welfare.
Councillors voted 6-3 to eliminate the annual $133,000 subsidy over the
next four years.
The decision follows more than five years of debate over whether the city
has a role in providing day care.

Small business, when you think
about it, is actually very big
business.
The number-crunchers at
Statistics Canada tell us that
businesses with fewer than 50
employees account for 96 per
cent of all businesses in Alberta.
Seventy-five per cent of all
businesses in the province have
fewer than 10 employees. And
15 per cent of the total
Edmonton workforce is made up
of people in business for
themselves -- the city had
72,200 self-employed workers in
1998.
