The candidates didn't attend and they didn't spend any money. It was a test entirely of local activists' ability to muster supporters for their candidates. Here are the results: Scott County (IA) Republican Straw Poll 8/20/99 Steve Forbes 61 34.27% George Bush 60 33.71% Alan Keyes 19 10.67% Elizabeth Dole 17 9.55% Gary Bauer 9 5.06% Dan Quayle 3 1.69% Orin Hatch 3 1.69% John McCain 3 1.69% Pat Buchanan 2 1.12% Gopaw Krishna (sic) 1 0.56% Total 178 100.00% As you can see, when you take away Forbes' money and Bush's liberal media support, Forbes edges out Bush, and nobody else even makes double-digits. Scott County, incidentally, is the third most populous county in the state. It's not surprising to know that away from all the liberal media hoopla real Iowans like Steve Forbes! Sincerely, David B.
