His total of 4,921 votes was greater than any previous straw poll winner's. Forbes put together a phenomenal organization in Iowa. It's not easy for a candidate trailing badly in opinion polls, as Forbes is, to deliver as many people as he did in Ames. And he did well without resorting to the scorched-earth tactics he used in the 1996 campaign. "As Forbes traveled the state in his two-bus motorcade before the straw poll, he drew respectable and attentive crowds. At one early-afternoon weekday event, in the hamlet of Tama (population 2,700), Forbes drew about 40 people to the American Legion hall. After he finished speaking, most of them filled out cards pledging to attend the straw poll. For those open to a conservative economic message, Forbes delivers it in a measured, persuasive, and occasionally humorous manner."
