First let me mention for those of you in eastern Iowa that Steve Forbes is
here this week and next, and will be in Iowa City on Tuesday, August 3rd at 8
A.M. at the City Plaza Hotel (formerly the downtown Holiday Inn). I was just
informed yesterday that I will be introducing him, so if you're planning to
attend be sure to bring a pillow! Forbes will also be in Cedar Rapids that
evening from 5 to 7 P.M. at the Superskate roller rink. I doubt you'll see
Steve on roller-skates, but then you also won't see him try to skate away
from the issues!
Next let me say that this week the Johnson County government is conducting a
straw poll of presidential candidates. Earlier in the week, Bush was leading
with 36 votes, followed by Dole in second place with 26--unsurprising results
in this ultraliberal college county where the Republican Central Committee
couldn't even muster a majority to oppose the imposition of a sales tax. In
the poll Forbes was the leading conservative candidate, in third place with
10 votes. Everyone else was in low single digits. If you haven't done so,
please go down to the Johnson County Fairgrounds and vote for Forbes. If
you've voted already please don't vote again--we'll leave the "vote early,
vote often" mentality to others.
I've just received a voter update in the Johnson County straw poll, as of
noon today, Thursday, July 28th:

As you can see, the relative position of the candidates hasn't changed since
Monday: it's still Bush, Dole, and then Forbes with the most votes of any
conservative candidate.
The Johnson County Auditor is also conducting an online poll which you may
take at Iowa Precinct Caucuses. Current results as of about
4:45 P.M. CDT were:
Lamar Alexander (1) 0%
Gary Bauer (0) 0%
Pat Buchanan (12) 5%
George W. Bush (3) 1%
Elizabeth Dole (1) 0%
Steve Forbes (90) 36%

The results probably reflect in part the dominance of conservatives online.
Please go vote and put Steve Forbes over the top!
I received the following this morning. Lawrence Kudlow is a noted economist
whose predictions of tax-revenue growth (doubling during the 1980s; even
faster growth in capital gains tax revenue) from cuts in marginal tax rates
have turned out to be right on target.
This just in: Forbes will be on Iowa Public Television's "Iowa Press"
program this Sunday, August 1, at noon and 7 P.M. Be sure to tune in!

KUDLOW PRAISES FORBES "VISIONARY LEADERSHIP";
NOTES BUSH'S LACK OF LEADERSHIP
The following are excerpts from a 7/28/99 column by Larry Kudlow in the
Washington Times:
"Every Republican presidential candidate should get behind Dennis Hastert,
Dick Armey, Tom DeLay, Bill Archer, John Kasich and company. They are
climbing back on the Laffer Curve, moving to the right side of history.
"Steve Forbes has already spoken out, saying, 'Washington, it's not your
money . . . they should immediately enact the Archer tax plan . . .
ultimately, we need a flat tax that's a tax cut.'
"This is visionary leadership from Mr. Forbes.
"But there's no vision on the issue from Gov. George W. Bush.
"Though Bill Archer represents Bush the Elder's Houston congressional
district, Bush the Younger has not yet endorsed the Archer plan. This is a
big mistake. It's a bad leading indicator. His charitable tax credit
proposal would clutter the tax code, not simplify or streamline it.
Faith-based social programs are a fine idea, but letting all Americans keep
more of what they earn is the best way to act on it.
"Ordinary people will spend and invest their own money more wisely than the
Federal government will. Economic freedom is the key to future technological
advance and wealth creation. King Dollar and broad-based marginal tax-rate
cuts are the right tonic for the new millennium stock market.
"The powerful currency prevents inflation. Tax cuts nurture and expand the
long wave of prosperity. Message to investors: replace fear with faith. Anno
Domini."
