Here are the results of the latest poll, taken by the Los Angeles Times: If the Jan. 24 Republican caucus for president were being held today for which one of the following candidates would you vote?      (Asked of likely GOP voters in Iowa)      IOWA: Los Angeles Times      -Bush, 43 percent      -Forbes, 25 percent      -Keyes, 10 percent      -McCain, 8 percent      -Bauer, 7 percent      -Hatch, 1 percent You may recall that in the early polls, Forbes was mired in single-digits--ahead of everyone but Bush, but still in single digits, while Bush rode high on liberal media support above 60%. Now a solid quarter of likely voters support Forbes, while Bush has seen his support drop well under a majority--and that's even before adjusting for liberal media bias, which tends to average around 10 percentage points, but can run from 5 to 20 points. Since the poll reports Republicans who say they're likely to vote rather than all registered Republicans, let's be conservative and assume a bias of only 5 points. Adjusting for a 5 point bias would create a result of Bush at 38% and Forbes at 30%. That result would send Forbes into New Hampshire as a clear and close challenger to Bush, while Bush would limp in wounded, unable to translate his overwhelming support by the liberal media and Republican establishment into overwhelming support by Iowa Republican voters. Of course, the ultimate vote totals will depend upon you. In the following three GrammNet messages--my last before the Straw Poll--I'll provide you some insight into Forbes the man, a summary analysis of Bush on the issues, including some late-breaking information, and a short editorial from the Manch ester Union-Leader on why Forbes is the heir to Reagan's optimistic brand of conservatism. If you're at all inclined to believe the liberal media myth of Bush as a "reasonable conservative," please read the third message before you vote! Sincerely, David B.
