Yellow Wood Sorrel
Oxalis europaea
This low, spreading member of the Wood Sorrel
family sports yellow flowers atop of clover-like leaves (leaves have a
sour taste). Each 5 petalled flower measures ½ inch (1.3 cm) wide
with 10 stamens and an erect, pencil-like pistil. The leaflets which measure
½ to ¾ inch (1.2 to 2 cm) wide, close at dusk and open in
the morning. Plants reach a height of 6 to 15 inches (15 to 37.5 cm) and
grows in waste places, along roadsides, and in fields. Flowers bloom from
May to October. (There are two different flowers called Yellow Wood Sorrel
in Kentucky, but they have different scientific names. The difference is
the angle at which the seed pod is bent. The seed pods of Oxalis stricta
are bent at a much sharper angle than the species pictured here).
