Wood Vetch
(aka: Devil’s Shoestring)

Vicia caroliniana

This member of the Pea family, the only native vetch to Kentucky, sports slender, white, 3/8 to ½ inch (.38 to 1.3 cm) long white flowers in racemes. The leaves are pinnate with 5 to 9 pairs of narrow leaflets that are ended with a tendril (possibly the origin of the name Devil’s shoestring). The plant reaches heights of 15 to 30 inches (38 to 76 cm) and may be found in oak woods. Flowers bloom in April.
