Tall Bellflower
Campanula americana
Unlike most members of the Bluebell family, this
one does not have bell-shaped flowers. Instead, this species sports a blue,
flat, 5-lobed flower with a lighter ring of blue at the throat of the flower
and a long, curved, protruding style. Flowers measure ¾ to 1 inch
(2 to 2.5 cm) across. The leaves are thin, long-pointed, lanceolate, toothed,
and measure 3 to 6 inches (7.5 to-15 cm) in length. Plants range from 1.5
to 6 feet (45.7 to 183 cm) in height and are found in rich soil, thickets
and banks. Flowers bloom from June to August.
