Wild Sweet William
(a.k.a.: Meadow Phlox)

Phlox maculata
This member of the Phlox family sports cylindrical, compound inflorescences of ½ to ¾ inch (1.2 to 1.9 cm) wide reddish-purple flowers atop a stiffly erect, 20 to 30 inch (50 to 76 cm) high, purple spotted stem.  Leaves are lance shaped and measure 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) long. This plant closely resembles the garden-variety phlox, but has longer corollas and the flowers are in more cylindrical clusters. This plant can be found frequenting open woods and meadows. Flowers bloom in July.
