Each 3/4 to 1.25 inch (1.9 to 3.2 cm) long flower consists of one large sac-like sepal with a "tail" at one end. Leaves are 1.5 to 3.5 inches (3.8 to 8.8 cm) long and are ovate and pale. Stems are 2 to 5 feet (61 to 152 cm tall) and are juicy and nearly translucent. This plant frequents moist, shady soil and form seed capsules that break open when touched.
