Plantain-leaved Pussytoes

Antennaria plantaginifolia

This member of the Composite family sports white flowers in small heads in dense clusters atop a woolly stem. Male and female flowers are on different plants with the female flowers being showier. Leaves are mostly in basal rosettes and usually have 3 to 5 obvious veins and are somewhat spoon shaped. Plants spread by runners and are found in woods, fields, banks and rocky places. Plants reach heights of 4 to 16 inches (10.2 to 40.6 cm) and bloom from March to May.

[Note: There is some disagreement by botanists regarding the classification of Pussytoes. Some sources recognize anywhere from 6 to 32 different species. A very closely related species is Field Pussytoes (A. neglecta). It is slightly smaller than the Plantain-leaved Pussytoes and has only one main vein on it’s leaves.]
