Ox-eye Daisy

Chrysanthemum leucanthemum

This easily recognizable member of the Composite Family sports flower heads 1 ½ to 2 inches (1.3 to 5.1 cm) across atop a slender, 1 to 2 ft (30 to 61 cm) high stem. The white ray flowers are all female, with the yellow disk flowers, depressed in the center, being both male and female. The leaves are dark green, narrow and much lobed with blunt, large teeth. Basal leaves measure up to 6 inches (15 cm) long with the upper ones being half that size. This European immigrant is abundant in fields meadows, and roadsides and ranges from 1 to 3 ft (30 to 91 cm) tall. Flowers bloom from June to Aug.

The genus name Chrysanthemum  is a Greek name meaning “yellow flower” while the species name leucanthemum means “white flower”.

NOTE: This species is not to be confused with a SheDaisy  (which looks like this).
