Moss Phlox
(aka: Moss Pink)
Phlox subulata
This low member of the Phlox family form moss-like
mats of pink to lavender flowers arranged in clusters at the end of the
stems. Each 0.75 inch (2 cm) wide flower has five notched petals
that unite to form a tubular corolla with five slightly protruding stamens.
The needle-like leaves range up to 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) long and are opposite
and close together. The plant frequently forms a dense carpet of branches
from 2 to 5 inches (5 to 12.5 cm) high and appears in dry, sandy and rocky
places. Flowers bloom in April and May.
