Indian Tobacco
Lobelia inflata
This member of the Lobelia (or Bluebell) family
sports tiny pale blue flowers with two lips. The lower lip has three lobes
and the upper lip two lobes. Flowers measure 3/8 inch (1 cm) long atop
a slightly hairy stem. The thin, light green, ovate, alternate, wavy toothed
leaves are 1 - 2.5 inches (2.5 - 6.3 cm) long. This inhabitant of open
woods, thickets and fields grows to a height of 1 -2 feet (30 - 60 cm).
The name comes from the tradition that American Indians smoked and chewed
the dried leaves of this plant. Plant flowers from June to October.
