Horse Nettle
Solanum carolinense
This thorny member of the Nightshade family has
white or lavender 5 petaled, star-like flowers with yellow centers. The
central cone is formed form the elongated anthers of the 5 stamens inside
the flower. The flowers are 0.75 - 1/25 inches (2 - 3.1 cm) wide. The rough,
elliptic oblong, coarsely lobed leaves are 3 - 5 inches (8 - 12.5 cm) long
and, like the stem, are covered with prickles. The plant is commonly found
in fields, waste places and gardens. Flowers appear from May to October.
