Hoary Mountain Mint
Pycnanthemum incanum
This member of the mint family has small white
to lavender flowers in dense, rounded clusters in the leaf axils. The flowers,
1/3 inch (8 mm) wide, are purple dotted on the two lower lips and have
a hairy calyx. Flower clusters are up to 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) wide. The
leaves are ovate, toothed and opposite with the upper leaves whitened.
The plant grows to a height of 1-3 feet ( 30 cm - 1 m) and has a square
stem that is characteristic of all mints. The plant frequently grows in
woodlands, thickets and meadows and flowers from July to September.
