Wild Garlic

Allium canadense

This member of the Lily Family (sometimes incorerctly called “wild onion”), sports an umbel of pinkish flowers measuring  ½ inch (1.3 cm) across (many are replaced by bulblets) that consist of three petals and three petal like sepals. The spathe at base of the umbel is 3 parted (A related species, File garlic, A. Vineale has a one parted spathe). The 8 to 24 inch (15 to 45 cm) leaves are linear, solid (A. Vineale  has hollow leaves like that of an onion), flattened and mostly at the base. Frequent in meadows, openings, pastures and roadsides. Flowers bloom from May to June.
