Fire Pink
(aka Red Catchfly)
Silene virginica
This colorful member of the Pink family bears
flowers with five, brilliant red notched petals supported by weak stems
that are 1-2 feet (30-60 cm) long. The sepals are fused into a single tube
that, like the stem, are sticky (hence the name catchfly).
Flowers are 1. 5 inches (3.8 cm) wide. The opposite,
lanceolate leaves are 1.5-4 inches (3.8-10 cm) long. Plants range in height
from 6-24 inches (15-60 cm) and are frequent in open woods, thickets and
rocky slopes. Flowers bloom April to June.
